Reap the Hard Ground

Reap the Hard Ground

I was short of the mark once again
The faller, fused to the earth
With mute flesh and bones
All battered, and splayed in deep red

I’ve grazed the clear skies
And I’ve claimed the hard ground
In a passionate lunge
Then a hopeless swan-dive

I’m the scattered remnants of hope
Burned into the hearts and minds
Of kin, every hour after hour

And to them I say:
“You are free to shed, the weight of my world
I was never truly worthy
Of your love and concern”
