A Trapdoor Falls Open

A Trapdoor Falls Open

A collision rattles the mind,

A trapdoor falls open

And a year-worth of sparks

Fade the whole way down

A beaten vessel splits apart

A phantom floats from the wreckage

And the span of his days

Weighs him down with regret

A fever dream is uncorked

A long draft kills the sorrow

And it’s never enough

To dull the blast, the whiplash

A new north star climbs

A road cleaves through the shock

And its swerves unfazed

By all that burns in its wake
