Through Standing Water

Image

I shrink through the marshes
In a slow desperate wading
Stewing each day
Among the fuming, stagnant waters

They are plagued
By a host of savage ghouls
Tussling violently
Obscured by the towering sycamores

Ivory resolve
Preaches above
Through branch and vine
As I dare to tramp forth

In blind defiance
I binge on water
Mile after mile
Beyond muck and shrub

The swamp bends and ails
Beneath high crescent splendor
Shimmering proudly
So silently heroic

The steam abates
As does the swell of nightly voices
Swarming for the depths of my earlobes
Clashing, crackling and clamoring

Upon solid ground
I map the truest route to bliss
Where I can hope to remain briefly
As the marshes flood
Claim and expand
