Crossfires and Isolation

Crossfires and Isolation

Our boastful words collide

Blood red and shameless,

They cleave the day to ribbons

For the phantoms we carry

 ~

Walled away and enraged

As black seas erupt

And tall tales are woven

In the dark of our minds

 ~

In hideaway we spiral

Locked forever in our violence

Still cradling the fire

We blazed long ago as one

 ~

What will we become

In tomorrow’s red mist?

When will the binds of our tribe

Turn to rivers of ash?

Precise language, imagery, and cadence, raises this piece high. It is difficult to successfully span the entire history of humankind in 16 lines. But there it is. Peace in our time.
